Dirty Detours Spring Fling
Now postponed to the 4th November 2023.

No longer the 30th September, Waikeretu, Waikato

That’s right, we are back again but this time it’s a spring fling! This year’s Dirty Detour isn’t to be underestimated as it will tackle 100ish kilometres of mainly gravel roads with 1,500ish metres of climbing. The rigorous ride, which is unsupported and unmarshalled, will be tackled in two person teams. This is a journey across beautifully tough terrain that rewards accomplishment. It’s about an adventure, not a race. Each team will have to be reliant on each other and ensure that they stay together, work together, and most importantly ride together as they navigate their way through the remote route.

The unforgettable experience will be celebrated with others at the finish where you’ll find food, coffee, and beer to bring you back from the brink. The ride is all about community, great times on bikes, exploring new routes, creating new experiences, and having a bloody good shindig at the after-party.

This year we’re offering all NZ Cycling Journal subscribers a discounted entry however if you don’t subscribe you can still enter at full price. One entry ticket includes entry for you and your team partner to our ride and our afterparty, as well as a swag bag, on-course paramedics in case of emergency and access to our exclusive route.

Dirty Detours couldn’t be done without the support of our amazing partners and friends. Marin is the presenting partner and helps bring the event to life! POC is our supporting partner and helps keep you feed and hydrated at the after-party. Nikau Cave & Café hosts the event, and they rally the community of Waikaretu and surrounds to support. And we have a bunch of bloody good friends who are all passionate about our vision for the event. Lastly, thanks to you for your support!

Dirty Detours Spring Fling Details

Location: Nikau Cave & Café – 1770 Waikaretu Valley Rd, Waikaretu.

Accom/Camp Options: There’s a few options but if you want a roof over your head need to get in quick. However, if you want to camp there’s plenty of space and its only five bucks a night! Contact Anne at Nikau Café for both options on the phone 09 233 3199 or email info@nikaucave.co.nz

Food/Coffee: Our friends at Nikau Cave & Café have you covered with good country fare and great coffee. We will provide filter coffee pre ride and a bit of grub and a beer post ride.

Schedule: It’s a relaxed affair but here’s a rough guideline. Rego will be from 9am, briefing will be at 9:45am, first team leaves at 10am (each team in minute waves after that), after-party kicks off from 2pm and will run into the early evening.

Route: This will be provided via downloadable GPX file a week before the event. Highly recommend a head unit or some way to strap your phone to your handlebar as the courses will not be marked, and there are a lot of turns and easy ways to get really turned around out there. A rough estimation of ride time for the loop is around 4-6hrs.

Aid Stations: There will be one semi-official bake-sale in the middle of the route. It will have water, sweet and savoury treats to get replenish and get you back home. The bake-sale is cash-only and will help raise money for the local school (Waikaretu) so please be generous. However, there’s not much external support and you are on your own for the most part. Ensure you bring enough ride snacks and any other nutrition that you need.

Bike: This ride is a challenging ride of 100km. Experience with this type of riding is essential. If you have any questions, please get in touch. As this is a gravel/off-road ride, we recommend a minimum of 38mm+ knobbly tyres and we’d say the bigger, the better when it comes to choosing. We’d also recommend a bar bag and saddle bag combo or similar with spares, tools, snacks, and extra layers; given the challenging nature of the route!

Safety: This is our biggest concern! There’s an on-course paramedic, a traffic management plan and we have let all the residents know about the event. With that said it’s a remote area, the roads are open so please be courteous to other road users, the public and your fellow riders. Our team will send out via email a general guideline for best practice during the event.
